Your Summer Workout Playlist

My dad has been running marathons for years, and in that time he’s also become a marathon coach, so I have a wonderful resource to turn to as I train for my first full marathon – something that I and a few others here at The Evolution of Mom committed to back in March, when two wonderful, selfless little girls raised over $40,000 for their school’s food pantry.

My mother and my husband will give me flack and roll their eyes and groan when I say this, but I’ve found out that I really don’t mind running. I love having a schedule to stick to, a goal to meet, and I especially love the freedom that comes with running outside in the gorgeous Rocky Mountain summertime.

While my dad and I have all that in common, we differ in that he prefers not to listen to music when he’s working out or running, and I absolutely cannot do either without a strong bass line thumping in my ears.

I put together a list of thirty songs that have helped me get through tough workouts and long runs. I’m really not a fan of finding workout playlists online (they’re all. over. the. place.) that consist of nothing but Top 40 hits from the last three years, because we’ve all heard every last one of them umpteen times, and we’re already skipping them on our REGULAR playlists, so I tried to populate mine mostly with pieces you may not have heard. Some I call “Rock the Cardio,” others I label, “Push to the End!” and still others…well, “You’re the Sexiest Woman in this Gym!”

Note: Songs marked with an asterisk (*) contain explicit lyrics; clean versions are also available. And by “explicit,” I mean even a single word I wouldn’t want my kids saying in front of my very conservative mother-in-law, so you won’t find any surprises!

I’m always looking for new music for my workouts. I’m definitely going to try #27! A few of my faves are “Put Your Back Into It” by Ice Cube and “Work B****” by Britney Spears.
